R.Crumb meet Cezanne? Known only as Mister, this guy (I assume!) from Nashville Tennessee creates paintings inspired by pornography and wishes to lift the curtains between classical figure painting, avant-guard expressionism, erotica, and raw stag!
Shunga literally translates from Japanese to English as “images of spring.” Spring being the time of recreation, procreation and, well, the time that inspires man and woman to have sex!!!
Shunga’s nothing new (in fact it’s ancient!), these hardcore artworks were amazingly produced between the sixteenth and nineteenth century. Australian based artist Tim Patch is gaining notoriety for a “penile art” portrait of Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Opposition Leader Kim Beazley. American photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is a pretty established professional but what rocks our boat is his book and travelling gallery: XXX: 30 Porn-Star Portraits (Bulfinch Press). It’s a simple idea that’s been very well executed. Our only wish it came around to a gallery close by. You can check out his work here
There’s a whole ’scanner culture’ online where people scan in select images from magazines and books and pride themselves on the quality of the scan, so much so that they put their own signature on the images. The Place.ru runs a very populated and often updated forum where scanners post up high resolution scans of male and female celebtrities, never mind that it’s all in Russian, you’re there for the big images not the words!!!
